3 Gears Functional Sculpture

gears3

In this interactive work by Terry Zigmund, Matt Gang and Tara Goreau created for the Community Workshop in February 2015, participants were invited to turn the crank to see the myriad of possible combinations for the future and consider how one may be affected by another. The 3 large intersecting gears list possible changes on the first gear, different populations that may be affected by these changes on the second gear, and potential effects of these changes on the final gear. When cranked, the gears create random combinations of scenarios to be considered. Participants were invited to record their word combinations on the large paper next to the sculpture.

Symbolically, the gears represent the kind of industrial work that still characterizes the South End.
